CARBON TRIVIA FACTS

What is Carbon?
Carbon is the chemical element with symbol C and atomic number 6. As a member of group 14 on the periodic table, it is nonmetallic and tetravalent-making four electrons available to form covalent chemical bonds.

How to choose the best charcoal for hookah or shisha?
Charcoal briquettes for shisha or hookah smoking must be hard enough and burn hot enough with persistent heat. It must be of all natural materials so there's no unpleasant smell when burning. Please read in more detail about the guidane on how to select the best charcoal for hookah here.

About 18% of the human body is made up from Carbon
Carbon is the basis of all life since it is part of DNA. The human body contains about 18% of carbon in one form or another. So if your body weight is 70 kg then you have got 16 kg carbon inside your body.

Diamonds are (forever) carbon too.
Certainly, you prefer diamonds instead of charcoals. But chemically speaking, diamonds and charcoals are just carbon in different form. Under certain temperature and pressure, the mother-nature took more than 1 billion years for transforming carbon-bearing materials into clear and shining diamonds. No wonder you prefer diamonds instead of regular charcoals.

What is Activated Carbon?
Activated Carbon is a form of carbon that has been processed through either chemical or physical activation to make it extremely porous and thus to have a very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions.

A teaspoon of activated carbon has the area of a football field
Due to its high degree of microporosity, just one gram of activated carbon has a surface area of approximately 500 m2 (or about 2.17 tennis courts)

You can eat activated carbon for health
Activated carbon is used to treat poisonings and overdoses following oral ingestion. Activated carbon is a proven and effective treatment for poisoning and acute diarrhea. Other decontamination methods such as ipecac-induced emesis or stomach pumps are now used rarely. Please consult the medical professional before you consume activated carbon.

Charcoal briquette was invented by Henry Ford
Henry Ford was not just father of modern automobiles. He was also the inventor of charcoal briquette. Henry Ford created the charcoal briquette from the wood scraps and sawdust from his car factory. Ford found that he could use the charcoal for a clean smoke free source of heat.

Various colors of ash
After burning some charcoal, you will find ash residue in various colors, from blue-gray to brown. Major components of ash from charcoal burning consist of:
-  Calcium Carbonate (25%-45%), CaCO3, fine white powder
-  Potassium Carbonate (less than 10%), K2CO3, white hygroscopic solid
Unburned carbon lends gray color to ash (black + white = gray).
Meanwhile, under high temperature, then CaCO3 will decompose to CaO (calcium oxide, pale yellow), and K2CO3 will turn to K2O (potassium oxide, pale yellow). Again, unburned carbon lends brown color to ash (black + yellow = brown).
Thus, we can conclude that yellowish ash charcoal burns hotter than whitish ash charcoal. Of course, further robust scientific experiments need to be conducted to confirm this conclusion.
